Om. We pray The Three-Eyed Lord Shiva, who is fragrant and who nourishes all.
Like the fruit falls off from the bondage of the stem, may we be liberated from death, from mortality.
The story behind the Maha Mritunjaya mantra is as follows:
A couple wanted to have a child. Shiva came to them and said that he would fulfill their wish, but they would have to choose between a good son who only lives 16 years or an evil son who lives for one hundred years. The couple chose to bear a good child knowing that his life would be limited, but they chose to let the boy live without telling him.
The parents named the boy Markandeya and raised him to be devoted spirituals like themselves. When the boy approached his death after nearly 16 years, he sensed that his prana was beginning to escape him. He thought of Shiva, his parents, and of the Maha Mritunjaya mantra which he then proceeded to chant. Shiva appears and stops his aging process, giving him immortality.
The mantra is still used today to promote healing. The name of the mantra means “great mantra relieving one from death and disease”.
The idea of a mantra has been around for thousands of years. A mantra is a word, a phrase, or a sound that is repeated to re-establish a connection with your Higher Self or God. Once you have established that connection, you can tap into all the benefits of a mantra. Mantras can be used to focus attention and bring the conscious mind under the sway of the subconscious mind and thus unlock creativity and access to inner peace, creativity, and joy.
Chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is an ancient and sacred practice. The chanting of this mantra is considered the most beneficial way to get rid of all the problems in life, whether it is of the mental or physical kind or both. Hindus say that the mantra works in numerous ways:
The mantra appears long, but once it is learned it can easily be incorporated into one’s daily routine.
After calming the body and mind through breathing exercises, Maha Mrityunjaya can be repeated multiple times (3, 11, 21, or even 36 times). If you have a health problem and are using this mantra for healing, draw your attention to your navel center while chanting.
This mantra is particularly for those who want to channel positive energy to bring good health and prosperity. A person who chants this mantra will help relieve them of their physical ailments.
