The Significance of Chanting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra
The story behind the Maha Mritunjaya mantra is as follows:
A couple wanted to have a child. Shiva came to them and said that he would fulfill their wish, but they would have to choose between a good son who only lives 16 years or an evil son who lives for one hundred years. The couple chose to bear a good child knowing that his life would be limited, but they chose to let the boy live without telling him.
The parents named the boy Markandeya and raised him to be devoted spirituals like themselves. When the boy approached his death after nearly 16 years, he sensed that his prana was beginning to escape him. He thought of Shiva, his parents, and of the Maha Mritunjaya mantra which he then proceeded to chant. Shiva appears and stops his aging process, giving him immortality.
The mantra is still used today to promote healing. The name of the mantra means “great mantra relieving one from death and disease”.

Once you have established that connection, you can tap into all the benefits of a mantra.
