Om Namo Narayana is an ancient mantra embedded in Vedic traditions:
ॐ नमो नारायणाय
Om Namah Narayanaya
Let us bow to the divine
There is more than one interpretation for this mantra, but it is generally agreed that Om Namo Narayana is a tool to help reach self-realization. This mantra helps humble the ego, bringing forth a sense of relaxation, as well as serves as a reminder that the speaker should focus on God within.
In Hinduism, Om refers to Brahman, the Supreme Cosmic Spirit, which is one of three focal points in Hinduism. It is believed that if one does prayer with an awareness of Om, God will answer. Namo refers to ‘bowing down, adoration or salutation’, and is commonly translated as ‘I bow to the Cosmic God’.
A mantra is a word, phrase, or sound that you repeat to yourself to help you achieve something. Mantras are thought to activate the brain’s emotion-regulating centers, so that you can focus on positive emotions, like love, peace, and contentment. Some mantras are short, others are long, and still, others are repetitive. Whatever the length, the goal of a mantra is the same: to help one achieve peace in the mind and the soul.
Maintaining a consistent daily practice of reciting mantras can help us to be more present in our daily lives. Mantra meditation is a highly effective treatment for a wide range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, and more.
It’s recommended to chant this mantra 108 times, twice a day over 40 days. For the most profound results, sit in meditation for at least ten minutes after the chant.
